BHEL is in the field of reactive power compensation for almost two decades. Static VAR Compensation and Series Compensation systems developed by BHEL have widely been put to use, by industries and utilities in HT systems, to overcome poor power factor problems. These are giving substantial benefits to the users with respect to operational convenience and financial savings. In order to provide a solution to reactive power problem in low-tension system, BHEL has introduced the-state-of-the-art technology for soft switching of LT capacitor called LTTSC (thyristor based) and LTSSC (triac based). Many such systems are in successful operation at various sites in India. BHEL supplied LTTSC system, used in wind electric generator (60/250KW NEPC MICON make) at Devarkulam site, Tamil Nadu, not only improved the Power Factor to 0.98, but also reduced the KVAr import and export to single digit.
Major applications include power factor control of a group of LT loads and VAR compensation for wind electric generator. The system can be installed at main incomer through transformer for smaller loads or on the LT side of transformers at different load centres. Depending on the system requirement, either LTTSC or LTSSC of suitable rating from 9 KVAr to the required MVAr can be offered.
